Steck Elementary school is proudly named after Amos Steck, who was born in Pennsylvania on January 8, 1822, wherein, he became a lawyer and practiced law before the State of Pennsylvania’s Supreme court, from 1843-1849. In 1849 he joined the California gold rush. Later he went to Colorado and joined the “Pikes’s Peak or Bust” gold rush. Afterward, he settled in Denver. He was President of Denver District 1 Board of Education from 1862-1866 and was the second mayor of Denver, from 1863-1864, and also was a founder of Denver University.
